An **Equated Monthly Installment (EMI)** is a static payment sum paid by a borrower to a financial lender at a fixed date every calendar month. EMIs are structured to pay off both the loan interest charges and a portion of the original loan principal amount concurrently. In the early stages of a loan lifecycle, a massive share of the EMI is consumed by interest payments. Over time, as the outstanding balance drops, a major chunk goes directly into principal reduction.
EMI is calculated using a universally standardized compounding mathematical formula:
Where:
• E is the Equated Monthly Installment (EMI).
• P represents the principal Loan Amount borrowed.
• r represents the monthly interest rate (annual interest rate divided by 12, then divided by 100).
• n represents the total loan duration tenure in months (years multiplied by 12).
• Loan Prepayments: Making regular, small prepayments towards your principal balance directly curtails the total loan tenure and saves massive cumulative interest amounts.
• Shorten Tenure: Although selecting a shorter tenure increases your monthly EMI size, it substantially lowers the total amount of interest paid over the life of the loan.
• Balance Transfer: If market interest rates decrease, consider moving your outstanding loan to a bank offering a lower ROI to reduce costs.
